Job description
R.W. Mercer, Company is a family-owned construction and service company, headquartered in Jackson, MI, with seven locations: six throughout Michigan and one in Indiana.
Working under the guidance of the Vice President of Finance (VPF), the Staff Accountant will prepare and maintain financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities and other related financial activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Assist VPF with preparation of daily, weekly, and monthly accounting processes and tasks such as general ledger, account reconciliation, account, and financial analysis.
• Prepare monthly work papers in support of an efficient monthly and yearly financial close.
• Review and approve journal entries, debit memos and credit memos.
• Assist with cash flow reporting.
• Review and approve ACH and wire payments.
• Code invoices, sets up new accounts, and reconcile accounts.
• Reconcile bank accounts monthly, verify deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
• Reconciles cash disbursement accounts, payroll, customer accounts, and other financial accounts.
• Serve as backup for Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable roles (Vacation coverage, illness, etc.).
• Responsible for maintaining Fixed Asset records.
• Calculate and record monthly depreciation.
• Conduct accounts payable check audits.
• Gather necessary account information and documents in support of Annual CPA review and audits.
• Prepare quarterly sales and use tax returns.
• Assist with ensuring policy and procedure compliance and improvement.
• Maintain current knowledge of organizational policies and procedures, federal and state policies and directives, and current accounting standards.
ADDITIONAL
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensure general ledger accounts are reconciled and adjustments to the general ledger are made accordingly.
• Critical interface between other departmental support operations.
• Assist with providing support to other departments and external agencies.
• Work directly with HR Manager for payroll completion. Serve as backup for HR for payroll processing.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
• 3+ years' experience
• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred
