What To Expect Day To Day
The successfully appointed Mechanical Design Engineer will join a highly skilled and dedicated team engaged in the design and development of innovative electro-mechanical products. The candidate will be responsible for delivering cost-effective detailed mechanical design solutions for new products and enhancements to existing products to the agreed technical requirements, timescales and budget.
The candidate should have broad knowledge of mechanical engineering design and should be able to support identification of the optimum technical and pragmatic solution to complex design problems including dynamic mechanisms and electro-mechanical systems.
As a mid-level engineer in the department, the candidate is expected to drive and support the technical development of new and existing products.
Responsibilities:
• Developing, testing and evaluating mechanical designs in accordance with Camlin NPI process, while complying with industry standards and regulations.
• Applying knowledge of engineering principles to evaluate mechanical and electro-mechanical systems and products.
• Selecting mechanical components in line with technical requirements.
• Creating high-quality, comprehensive engineering drawings (parts, assemblies, cables and wiring diagrams) in accordance with Camlin best practice.
• Creating and maintaining Bills of Materials and working with Purchasing to identify appropriate suppliers.
• Ensuring that products will perform consistently in specified operating environments, meeting Camlin quality and customer expectations.
• Applying Design for Manufacture & Assembly (DFM, DFA) techniques to ensure cost-effective and efficient design.
• Collaborate with other engineering functions, and other departments including the Operations team within Camlin.
• Taking an active part in design reviews, creating specifications and test plans.
• The successful candidate will have experience planning own work and working with limited supervision, and the ability to write technical proposals, engineering reports and test plans and to provide estimates of engineering costs and timescales to support bid and programme activities.
Essential Requirements:
• A minimum 2:1 degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline, or practical work experience commensurate to a 3rd level education.
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a mechanical engineering environment with a focus on design and development.
• Experience with Solid Edge or similar CAD package, including creation of parts, assemblies and detailed 2D drawings including use of GD&T.
• Knowledgeable in key engineering principles, assembly techniques and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to design cost effective solutions from specifications against agreed budget and timescale requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to address technical challenges.
• Ability to handle multiple competing tasks and demands.
• Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate effective collaboration within the team and with other departments.
Desired Criteria:
The following skills will be valuable but are not essential:
• Experience with Design for Manufacture and Design for Assembly approaches.
• Experience in planning and reporting on prototype testing / verification during product development.
• Experience with failure analysis and implementing corrective action.
• Hands-on practical experience of part manufacture, prototype assembly and testing.
• Appreciation of related engineering disciplines such as electronic design.
• Experience working with ECO and Business Systems (e.g. PLM).
• Experience with sheet metal component design.
• Experience with design for injection moulding.
