Job description
Are you looking to start a career in Painting & Decorating? Want to earn whilst you learn? Ian Williams is one of the UK’s leading property services companies and our award-winning apprenticeship scheme could help you realise your ambitions.

What does an apprenticeship at Ian Williams involve?

Being an Apprentice at Ian Williams, gives you the opportunity to be “hands on” and learn on the job, so you’re not just learning about decorating, you ARE decorating!

You will combine a combination of college and practical learning to study your chosen trade. You will get the opportunity to put your new skills into practice, while supported by the expert guidance of our experienced tradespeople - your own mentor.

What will I be doing?

The specific type of work will vary contract to contract, most contracts will be based in social housing. The types of tasks we cover include:
• Preparing surfaces (filling, sanding, caulking)
• Mastering the art of paint application (rolling, cutting in, brush skills)
• Sprucing up gloss work (doors and window frames, skirtings)
• Getting outdoors with external works (railings, sheds, fences and walls)
• Exploring different sites, working both inside and outside in all weather, whether it’s getting hot in the homes, or wrapping up in the winter on a commercial site

As well as this, you will:
• Attend college to understand “the how and the why” of your chosen trade (usually 1 day a week)
• Build a fantastic portfolio of evidence to go towards your End Point Assessment
• Be a valued member of the team and contribute to the overall success

What will I need to apply?

You don’t need to have had prior experience, all we ask for is;
• A genuine passion for painting and decorating and hands-on practical work
• A positive attitude with a willingness to stick with it and problem solve
• Commitment to building your career at Ian Williams – we are as committed to you as you are to us
• Strong organisational skills (to successfully juggle college and work)
• GCSE (or equivalent) grade 3 (D) or above in Maths and English
• DT or construction based qualification would be beneficial but is not essential

It will be your responsibility to get to site or an agreed pick up location.

How do I apply?

We will only be asking you to answer 3 questions and we don't need your CV, so spend some time crafting your answers based on the skills we have outlined above.

We reserve the right to shortlist prior to the closing date based on application volumes.

Proposed start September 2024.

What are the benefits of working at Ian Williams?
• Competitive rates of pay - from 2nd year NMW/NLW applies
• 22 days’ holiday per year plus bank holidays
• All Personal Protective Equipment and Uniform provided
• Pension contributions and Life insurance
• Travel allowance
• Toolkit
• EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) to support your Health & Wellbeing
• Enhanced Maternity/Paternity pay
